In the year 2010; I worked for a construction company in the South-Western region of Nigeria. The construction site wakes up halfway between Lagos, the commercial nerve center of Africa’s most populous country; and Abeokuta, one of Nigeria’s ancient cites. As a little boy in primary school, I had read stories about the famous Olumo rock. The company I worked for, hired a bungalow in the city of Abeokuta which was used as a camp for the majority of the skilled work force, most of whom were from Warri, in the oil rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria. So for the first time since reading about Olumo rock when I was about 9 years old, now a full grown man with two terrific boys (God has given us a third boy now) and a lovely wife; I was ready to go see that mountain of a rock for the first time.
It
was a Sunday afternoon and I approached the location with anticipation;
finally, the rock was in sight, and grew bigger and bigger as we approached. We
arrived at the gate and promptly paid the entrance fee to see the site of this
wonder of creation. It was beautiful, attractive and imposing; all in one
piece. It brought to mind a scripture
that is so full of depth that one will need to meditate upon it to be able to
make Bible sense of it – ‘And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they
drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that
Rock was Christ’. 1 Corinthians 10: 4. Wow, this is
awesome; this is terrific, rocks never move, they stay where you find them; but
there was a rock that defied the norms, it followed a people, pardon me; He,
not it, He followed the children of Israel as they journeyed in the wilderness.
Now we are the spiritual Israel and what a realization – He follows us and we
follow Him, for He said ‘follow me’ and now we know that He lives in us. Hallelujah;
He follows us, we drink from the Rock and we follow Him; but yet He lives in us
and that is how He follows us today.Wow! Amen, Hallelujah!
